This does not need to happen: An open letter to jumps horse owners The slaughter of a thoroughbred racer in the outskirts of Melbourne
Jumps racing will now cease in Victoria at the end of the 2010, and there are options availabile to stop your beloved horses from going to the knackery to be killed for dog meat.
We have been inundated with requests from animal welfare and rescue organisations to provide homes for horses to stop them from going to the knackery. We are urging all jumps horse owners who have so solidly defended their love for their animals to prove this by resisting the temptation of making your last couple of hundred dollars from sending them to the knackery.
We have already secured homes for all of Butch Londregan's horses so will be disappointed if he continues with his threat to send them to the knackery, as we have proven that he has absolutely no reason to. We are happy to assist you to find new homes for your horses to spare them this fate. However it must be remembered that it is the responsibility of horse owners to provide appropriate homes for your horses, and not use this as an opportunity to relinquesh your responsibility of these animals. As a non-profit, we simply cannot afford to fund the on-going care of these animals, and hope that you will re-invest the money these horses have won for you in the past.
I believe we speak for every horse owner when we say that the knackery is the last place anybody wants their horse to end up. We have witnessed it first hand, and will be disappointed if anybody who claims they love their horses, sends them to the knackery.
If you are a horse owner who is planning to surrender your horse, or a horse lover who is wanting to help re-home horses, please add this in the comments section.
